Grove Road Families

And surrounding roads

The publication of the 1950 voters registration by Ian Fuller for Grove Road set my memory going and although I did not know Mr. and Mrs. Whitehouse I did know Mr. and Mrs. Powell because when I first lived in Billericay we lived on the corner of The Avenue and Station Road. Mrs. Powell gave piano lessons and there must be many people in the 1940s and 1950s who had lessons from her.

There were a number of the Powell family in Billericay at that time. They were very active in the Methodist church in Western Road. I remember Miss Powell especially.

Grove Road was a side road off Bellevue Road in which towards the bottom lived the Cocks family consisting of the father and mother and two boys called John and Richard. I used to go to cubs with them up at the hall which was at the church in Perry Street in the 1950s. They subsequently moved to Bournemouth in the 1960s because of the father’s job. My parents went to see them a few months before my Father died in April 1971. They were a good kind family.

On the corner of Grove Road and Bellevue Road there lived the Lolley family. The Mother went to live near the police station in Billericay. There was a son Brian who emigrated to Perth, Western Australia and a daughter called Barbara.

In Mountnessing Road between Bellevue Road and Station Road where there are a number of modern houses there was one single house which I think was owned and occupied by a member of the Iles family. This family may well be able to confirm whether this was so.
