Memories of High Street Bakers

Cottis & Sons and Ed the Bread
by Gillian Giles

I worked at Cottis 1976 to 1984 and used to make the sandwiches and rolls, all lunch type goods etc.  I to Ed the Bread after Cottis had closed and made sandwiches there for another six and a half years.

It was a lovely job to have. We were allowed one cake a day, so I used to have a jam doughnut every day.  The Manageress Elsie, who worked on the bakery side, used to wear a yellow overall and the wasps wouldn’t go anywhere near her because of the colour. When they closed they gave me the chopping board and I still use it today.

I kept a scrapbook about the bakery and some clippings from Ed the Bread and reproduce it here as a flipbook. (click on the three dots and select full screen to see larger, press ESC to return to this screen.)

Below are pdf files of the same scrapbook which can be downloaded.
