13th Century Find

A Steelyard Weight
By Roland Lazarus

I found something in Billericay from between the Magna Carta and Peasants’ Revolt.
This is a part broken steelyard weight, from the late 13th century AD. The two headed eagle is believed to belong to Richard, Earl of Cornwall and would date after AD 1257 and before AD 1300. It indicates that goods were being traded by weight.
I found it by a footpath to the west of Billericay.
I have donated it to the Cater Museum in the High Street.
