In 1804 Caroline of Brunswick, the Princess of Wales and later the wife of George IV, stayed at the Terrace (now Royal Terrace) in Southend on Sea. While at Southend she visited the Ship Tavern on several occasions where on April 24 she enjoyed an aperitif before dinner followed by bread pudding, cheese and sherry.
State Papers show that on May 9 the Inn Keeper, William Whale, charged her £1:5s for a chaise to “Billerickay”. Thus it would appear Billericay was visited by Princess Caroline on May 9 1804, although the exact location of her visit is not known to me.
