Billericay Carnival c.1965

Cowboys and Indians
By Beverley Mead

The little girls in the film are myself and my younger sister Julie Barnes (nee Burman) along with our mum Elaine Burman who sadly  died in 2020. My dad, who loved his cine camera, is Derek Burman, he is now almost 87 years young and living with my husband and I here in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.
We lived in Basildon up until 2021, my parents having moved there from London not long after they married in 1959. My sister, who now lives in Rayleigh, and I were both born at home in Clayburn Circle (now Dengayne) in 1961(me)  and 1963 (my sister). My dads first job when he moved to Basildon was with John Tann and Sons, the safe manufacturers in Billericay, he also worked for Ilfords and at Orsett Hospital; he ended his career as a manager in the housing department of Basildon Council. He didn’t drive at the time the film was taken so we must have caught the bus to Billericay and made a day of it stopping off at Lake Meadows ahead of the carnival starting.
Being so young I don’t remember much about the day itself although from the look of it we had a great time and gauging by my sister’s reaction she particularly liked the Stingray float.
