The Billericay Carnival 1969

The Brownie's Float

At the age of nine and a half I remember searching through my Mother’s wardrobe to find a dress to suit the Brownie’s theme for the carnival in 1969.

I remember standing on the float and driving slowly up the High Street, waving to the crowds lining the road.  There was lots of clapping and cheering.  I also recall people in costumes walking along beside the floats with buckets to collet donations. People also threw coins for us to catch if we could.

My Dad took this picture as we came round Sun Corner, you can just see the Police Station in behind the float.

  • I can go back further than the present Carnival. In !953 the present Queen came to the throne – it was also the commemoration of the Pilgrim Fathers leaving the UK for the New World. A march took place through Billericay High Street all were dressed in puritan dress. I took part with a good friend Heather Green who attended with her trap pony Beauty (Heathers Dad was Chief Inspector at Billericay Police Station). My mother along with my Nana Mrs Amelia Hale also took part along with many other local people. It was an interesting time. Also the Pilgrim Fathers hid many of their people who were hunted at The Chantry (CafĂ©) as it was known then opposite St Mary’s Mag. Church. Tales were told of hidden passages within the Chantry Building
