Pilot Officer (Pilot) Richard Charles Edgar Bassom of 102 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve was killed on 24th September 1942, aged 28.

He is buried in the Kiel War Cemetery in Germany.

He was the son of Charles Bassom, a painter & decorator, and Ethel Clara Riches, a housewife. Richard was born on 23rd December 1913 and was baptised on 1st February 1914 at Mary Magdalen. The family lived at 38 High Street, Billericay.

On the 24th September 1942 a Handley Page Halifax II bomber W1055, piloted by P.O. Bassom took off from R.A.F. Pocklington, near York, at 00.16. The aircraft was on a mission over Flensberg, Germany and failed to return. The crew of seven were killed and the cause of loss was never established.
