A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF BILLERICAY

Introduction

This list is derived from one originally produced over twenty years ago and published as a booklet entitled A Bibliography of Billericay (1988). This version attempts to bring it up to date.

The purpose of the list is to provide those people interested in the history of Billericay with a source from which they can begin their own research. I have attempted to limit myself to listing books and articles that relate to Billericay. There are many general books about Essex that contain information that sets these items into a wider context. Some of the more useful of these have also been included.

Many of the items are in the form of pamphlets. I have tried to include brief notes indicating which items I consider to be of most value and to indicate subject matter where it is not obvious. I have not included all works of fiction written by local authors or people associated with the town.

Twenty-first century historians may well start their search for information with the internet and true local historians will want to look beyond the items in this bibliography, to the primary sources. This list does not include links to Billericay web pages. (Try Google or elsewhere on this website). A search of the Essex Record Office (ERO) catalogue or a visit to peruse their maps, land sale particulars, engravings, paintings, drawings and photographs will show just how much has been omitted from this listing.

The bibliography is organised in alphabetical order by subject. There is some cross referencing between subjects and a few links where this might be useful. In addition I hope that the list is concise enough in this format to allow for browsing / scrolling so that readers will be able to make their own connections.

Most of the items listed here should be available through the Essex Library Service . The main locations for books and periodicals on Essex history are the Essex Record Office [E], Chelmsford, Colchester and Southend Central Libraries. It would always be worth checking with a library if you are looking for a particular source before making a journey. The library at Billericay has a good stock of local material and unless indicated otherwise should be consulted first for the items listed here. The Cater Museum [CAT], in the High Street, has a limited amount of material.

Among abbreviations the reader will come across in the subject list are T.E.A.S. = Transactions of the Essex Archaeological Society, and BDQHR = Billericay and District Quarterly Historical Review.

It would be rash indeed to suggest that all the secondary sources available to the student of Billericay’s history are included here. I hope that readers will forgive any glaring mistakes or omissions and inform me of them so that corrections and additions can be made.
