Barclays Bank

The photograph shows the new Barclays shortly after it was completed in 1956 with a Morris Oxford parked in front. This building replaced Bank House, a Georgian style building with a porticoed entrance. If you look closely you can see what looks like a join in the building runing down the centre where the hanging sign is. This is because the previous building was replaced in two stages so that the business was not interupted. The only changes to this building since then have been cosmetic. The photo below shows the right hand side of the building where the right hand door has been adapted to contain the ATM.

This Barclays Bank is one of their original branches having been part of the Chelmsford based private bank Sparrow, Tufnell & Co. which was absorbed into Barclay & Co. of Lombard Street in 1896.

This site has quite a history having been the White Hart in the 1600’s which tranferred to it’s present position in 1770.
