Sidney Alfred Burles

Sidney Alfred Burles was born in Barling in 1895 and died of wounds on 30 April 1917 in France/Flanders (most likely on the Arras battlefield).

In the 1901 census he was living with his parents William Perrin (b. 1866) and Charlotte (Fanny) Elizabeth (1863-1899, nee Balls), aged 35 and 28 respectively in Hawkwell with siblings William 11 and George 4.  His father’s occupation was farmer.

In the 1911 census, Sidney aged 16, was still living with his parents William, born Shoebury, and Charlotte, born Dublin, at White Lilies Farm, Stock and siblings William John 21, George 14 and Emma Elsie 6.  The boys worked on the farm.

He enlisted into the Essex Regiment, 9th Battalion, service no. was 23236

Private  Burles has no known grave but his name is on the Arras Memorial, Bay 7.  He was awarded the Victory and British War Medals.
