My Memories of Billericay

My mother brought me here as a child to Lake Meadows little thinking we would ever live here.

My wife Ann got a job at the Burns Unit at St Andrew’s Hospital, that was forty five years ago.

We live on the Buttsbury estate in Pauline Gardens.

When buying a Ford car at Brooke Street, Brentwood, the salesman told me his father built our house amongst others. I asked him if his father employed builders who did not have spirit levels!

I used to have a beer or two at the Railway Hotel run by Dick and Kath with their son, Alice was the barmaid. I played crib with her brother both in their 80’s. Harry?? who was in his 90s used to come in. He claimed he was the gardener at Norsey Manor?? He remembered the hay carts lining up in the High Street, all the drivers would sleep on top of the hay except the lead driver. He also told me that Billericay had 19 pubs.
