Moving to Billericay

A superstitious start to life in the town

We were about to move to Billericay and had seen a solicitor and he had done all the work, so we thought, and the time came for us to go down and look at the house in Dedham Road to see if it was ready for us to move in the following day.

I came down there and I found out that the solicitor had sold my house but had forgotten to buy the new one for me. So I was sort of a little bit put out and spoke to the solicitor who eventually said ‘Well there is no reason to be insulting Mr Barr’ and I told him if the house wasn’t mine in the next half an hour – by the time I reached Billericay again from my house in Romford I would be talking to the Law Society.

So we drove down to Billericay and we pulled up outside the site office, the site manager came running out waving his hands and saying ‘it’s OK, it’s OK, it’s yours’. Of course by that time, when we actually moved in, we moved in on Friday the 13th. Now the removal men were wearing green overalls, it was Friday the 13th, my wife and I are not superstitious or we weren’t but when we she had twins we became superstitious!
