Marker Stone in South Green

Can anyone help?

I have been sent a photo of a marker stone which stands in South Green quite close to the Kings Head. Does anyone know the history behind it?

The wording on the stone reads “3ft to the East of this stone is the property of the Writtle Brewery Company”

  • I worked for the man whose company built the houses on the estate behind the stone. He always said that he could only get permission to build providing the stone, stating ownership remained in situ.

  • You are correct that the 3ft to the east of the stone is the edge of the road, so that seems strange. I can only assume that the stone got moved at some point, or possibly the road moved. A photograph of the Kings Head appears to show the pub with a large forecourt, which is not there today. Perhaps the road was further to the east nearer St Peter’s School.

The stone is still in situ on the grass verge just north of the footbridge.

  • I remember the stone but have no idea what was 3ft towards the road. I don’t believe that it is still there.

  • The Writtle Brewery Company owned the Kings Head amongst other pubs in the 1800s according to their inventory.
