Herbert Stewart

Sergeant Herbert Stewart was born in Great Burstead in 1886 and died, aged 32, of wounds on 24 August 1918 in France/Flanders.

In the 1901 census, aged 15, he was living with his mother, then Emily Wade (aged 32) on Tye Common, Great Burstead and her second husband Henry (aged 34, occupation general labourer) and their children, Catherine 3 and Frederick 1.   Herbert’s occupation was domestic gardener.

In 1909 Herbert married Rose Neville (born 1887, Stock, died June 1930, aged 44?).

In the 1911 census, Herbert, aged 25, was living with his wife Rose (aged 24) – they had married in 1909), and their  daughters Evelyn May, 2, born Buttsbury and Winifred Alice, aged 2 months, born Ramsden Heath.   Herbert’s occupation was second gardener domestic.

Sergeant Herbert Stewart  served in the Essex Regiment, 9th Battalion, his service no. 250466.
