2Lt. Percival Edey Cripps
Service number ‘99802’ – 1/5th Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment)
Killed in action on Saturday 8th June 1940 , aged 23.
Son of Percy r & Beatrice H Cripps of Little Burstead.
Commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial.
The last British troops were evacuated from Dunkirk on 3rd June 1940 and thus it would seem that 2Lt. Cripps was among the men left behind who then had to retreat across Northern France. The 1/5th Bn. Sherwood Foresters travelled across France and some were evacuated from Le Havre and others were eventually evacuated from Brest.
2Lt. Cripps was killed during the retreat across France. The family story is that Percival was left behind and blew up a bridge to stop the German advance. This would support the report that he was listed as missing and then later confirmed dead.
