The Mystery of the bottles

War Memorial 2014

Shortly after the Remembrance Service on Sunday 9th November 2014 six bottles of Becks beer appeared on the War Memorial. Each bottle had a name on it and the bottles were unopened. A little time passed before the Archive started to get questions directed to it regarding these bottles and we decided to investigate.

The British Legion were contacted and asked about it but they had no idea and at first were concerned about it. However further investigation established that the soldiers identified on the bottles were all members of 1st Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment who were killed on active service in Afghanistan.

The men remembered on the bottles are:

Lance Corporal Adam Drane of Bury St. Edmunds killed 8th December 2009

Private Robert Hayes of Cambridge killed 5th January 2010

Lance Corporal Scott of Chelmsford Hardy & Lance Corporal James Grigg of Hartismere, Suffolk were both killed 18th March 2010 in the same operation.

Corporal Alex Guy of St. Neotts killed 16th June 2012

Captain Martin Driver of Barnsley who died of wounds 17th March 2010 in Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham.
