First World War Memorial

A personal view of the dedication of the Billericay Memorial

Dedication of the War Memorial
My grandmother outside 36 High Street

This picture shows the dedication of the First World War memorial in the High Street.  Pictured to the right of the memorial in the hat and long scarf is my grandmother Mary Ann Cooke (nee Fells), her son Albert Victor Cooke (1898 – 1918) is commemorated on the memorial – his name is just visible above the wreaths to the right.

Albert died at the Somme in France on 11th May 1918 aged just 19.  He is buried at the Blangy-Tronville Communal Cemetery.

Mary Ann lived in the High Street within sight of the memorial – her home, number 36, was where Argos is now.  The family moved to Billericay from London for her husband Edward Lewis Cooke’s health as he suffered from TB.  His employers at the Stock Exchange found them the house in 1914.

Can anyone identify any of the other people in the war memorial picture?
