Uplands Cottage

Brian's home - the cottage behind the Day Centre

The Uplands cottage used to be set in the middle of fields even though it is just behind the Chequers pub.
Brian (Wood) used to recount many stories about the times he and his brother Colin played in the fields, long before the houses in the Cloisters were built, and he was always ready to discuss current affairs.

The garden was always a colourful display that everybody stopped to admire and talk to Brian about.

The cottage had no water supply at all to the bathroom and no hot water apart from via pans boiled on the gas stove.

Now sold, presumably to a properrty developer, it is likely to be demolished soon and another piece of Billericay history will soon be lost.

  • We remember “Uplands Cottage”, as we passed by the Cottage on our way to school some mornings. We lived in Meadoway when Billericay was open spaces and rolling green fields. My Dad was also in the Fire Brigade stationed at “Sun Street” I shall look forward to hear more from Mr Wood on the bygone days and the Firemen of Billericay.

  • The Wood family were very well known in the town, being associated with the fire brigade. There will be stories linked to the Wood twins in future articles
